We all must work together to solve the climate crisis. Policy, private sector action, sustainability and decarbonization need to work in tandem towards a climate solution. This is one of the reasons we are excited to have Rubicon as a partner – sustainability is at the core of Rubicon’s business model, as a key player in transforming the waste industry.

Rubicon is a software platform that provides smart waste and recycling solutions for businesses and governments worldwide. It was founded more than a decade ago with a mission to end waste. The company is transforming the waste industry by helping its partners move away from the legacy landfill model and toward circular solutions that slow the accumulation of waste and its harmful by-products, which include significant carbon emissions. Rubicon was one of the first, and has become one of the largest, Certified B Corporations in the world, first attaining its certification back in 2012. With each re-certification since then, Rubicon’s B Corp score has increased, and in both 2017 and 2018 the company was awarded Best for the World honors for Governance. Then, in 2018, 2019, and 2021 Rubicon was named Best for the World for Environment in recognition of the company’s environmental and sustainability practices.

“Environmental innovation is at the core of Rubicon’s approach to building a more sustainable future, which is why we are so pleased to work with NCX,” said David Rachelson, Chief Sustainability Officer at Rubicon. “NCX has an innovative approach to mitigate carbon in the atmosphere by extending the life of forests through providing an alternative source of livelihood to timber landowners. Rubicon views this work with NCX as a key component of our overall plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, in line with Rubicon’s commitment as an early signatory to Amazon’s and Global Optimism’s Climate Pledge.”

As David mentions, both Rubicon and NCX are using AI and technology to drive innovative solutions to environmental problems. Rubicon’s three core products underpin the company’s outstanding environmental performance. The award-winning RUBICONSmartCity™ technology platform enables city governments to run faster, smarter, and more effective waste, recycling, and municipal fleet operations. The company’s RUBICONConnect™ portal seamlessly provides data and analytics to Rubicon’s global network of customers to help them achieve their waste, recycling, and sustainability goals. And the RUBICONPro™ platform helps independent haulers manage and grow their businesses through an always-on, customizable user dashboard that optimizes fleet operations, saving time, money, and labor hours.

NCX also believes technology and data is essential to drive change – NCX’s forest carbon marketplace is underpinned by AI-powered Basemap, a high-resolution forest inventory map developed in collaboration with Microsoft’s ‘AI for Earth’ program. Basemap combines remote sensing, machine learning, statistical models and field measurements to measure the sizes and species of trees on every acre across the U.S. The NCX approach uses this Basemap technology to improve on traditional forest carbon projects by assessing an acre-level baseline, increasing transparency through rigorous data science and remote sensing measurement and evaluation, and opening up participation to all forest owners, including the 200 million acres owned by small forest landowners previously excluded from forest carbon markets.

Last month NCX’s head of business development, Julia, spoke at Rubicon’s Concordia Sustainability Today event. Check out the recording of her talk here!
